The Outpost Training Programs
Our programs are centred around helping students gain the independence, emotional fitness and self-confidence needed to follow their passions and be successful. Each term has its own set of adventure activities, soft skill workshops and personal mentoring sessions. These focus on equipping you as a young adult with emotional intelligence, time, stress and conflict management, leadership, teamwork, problem-solving skills, and so much more.
The Academy
The Outpost Academy is dedicated to providing a comprehensive and immersive educational experience in the fields of wildlife conservation, game management, animal health, animal production and equine studies. Our academy is ideal for students seeking a meaningful gap year opportunity or those passionate about building a career working with animals and nature.
Expanding Our Animal Production Offering
From the 2027 intake, The Outpost Academy will offer a expanded Animal Production programme — with more specialisation fields accredited at NQF Level 4 and NQF Level 5.
Students are able to choose their preferred specialisation field according to their career goals and interests.
Our accredited and recognised fields include:
Wildlife Management (NQF 4 & NQF 5)
Beef Production (NQF 4 & NQF 5)
Sheep & Wool Production (NQF 4 & NQF 5)
MSD Animal Health Programme (NQF 4 & NQF 5)
This ensures students receive structured, nationally recognised qualifications combined with intensive practical exposure across conservation, commercial production, and animal health sectors.
Practical Wildlife Exposure
Wildlife remains a cornerstone of The Outpost Academy.
Students train in an environment rich in biodiversity, including zebra, eland, gemsbok, springbok, black impala, blesbok, reedbuck, black wildebeest, and various bird species.
Although larger species such as lions, elephants, and rhinos are not resident on the property, organised excursions to nearby game reserves form an essential part of the Game & Wildlife Management programme. These excursions provide students with valuable real-world conservation and biodiversity management experience in natural reserve environments.
Courses and Programmes
We offer SAQA-accredited qualifications in Animal Production at both NQF Level 4 and NQF Level 5, combining structured academic learning with intensive hands-on practical training in real farm and wildlife environments.
National Certificate in Animal Production (NQF Level 4) – A one-year programme.
National Diploma in Animal Production (NQF Level 5) – A two-year programme.
Students choose a specialisation field aligned with their career goals while gaining broad foundational knowledge across the animal production sector.
Gap Year – Natural Horsemanship & Equine Science
A practical programme covering Natural Horsemanship, equine care, stable management, and science-based equine studies.
Holiday Programme for Kids
A structured adventure programme where children develop horse riding skills and outdoor confidence in a safe environment.
Unique Features
Our curriculum incorporates training in natural horsemanship and horse-riding skills, ensuring students gain practical experience in working with horses. This is seamlessly integrated into all our courses.
For those interested in focusing exclusively on equestrian studies, we provide the flexibility to tailor your experience. You can choose to enroll in a dedicated equestrian year by selecting from our specialized programs and complementing them with online courses that include practical components. This option allows you to concentrate solely on equine training and management, aligning with your personal interests and career goals.
Whether you’re aiming for a comprehensive blend of animal and equine education or a focused equestrian pathway, The Outpost Academy offers programs designed to meet your aspirations.
Students will be involved in planning and executing events at the lodge, gaining hands-on experience in event management and coordination.
Students will go on academic trips designed to enrich their experience, offering them unique opportunities to observe and study in various settings and contexts.
As part of the experience, students will work on the farm and assist with day-to-day tasks when not studying. This hands-on involvement helps them learn essential skills required for farm management and operations.
Our programs are designed with a balanced approach, consisting of 50% theoretical knowledge and 50% practical application. This ensures that students not only learn the necessary concepts but also gain hands-on experience in real-world scenarios.
Facilities and Accommodation
We provide comfortable on-site accommodation for our students, ensuring a safe and convenient living environment.
Our package includes nutritious meals, and students will have opportunities to sometimes work in the kitchen in teams to prepare meals, fostering teamwork and practical cooking skills.
